Draw walls from a traced plan

What is the fastest reliable way to build walls over a floor plan?

Trace the wall faces on the ground plane with the Line and Rectangle tools, keeping every wall as a closed face, then Push/Pull the whole floor plate up to storey height in one action. Model walls as their real thickness rather than single lines, and put each storey in its own group so upper floors do not fuse to lower ones.

Before you start

The native SketchUp method

Uses only what ships with SketchUp: Line, Rectangle, Push/Pull, Offset, Groups. No extension required.

  1. Trace the outer face Follow the outside wall line all the way round until the loop closes and a face appears.
  2. Offset the thickness Use Offset on that face at the real wall thickness to get the inner face in one move.
  3. Add internal partitions Trace partitions as closed rectangles so each one carries its own face.
  4. Delete the floor void Erase the interior faces you do not want extruded, leaving only wall footprint faces.
  5. Push/Pull to height Push/Pull one wall face to storey height, then double-click the rest to repeat the same distance.
  6. Group the storey Select everything and group it. Name it by level so the next storey stays independent.

Where this usually goes wrong

  • • Drawing walls as single lines, which gives you no thickness to work with later.
  • • A trace that never closes, so no face appears — usually a line that missed an endpoint.
  • • Building all storeys loose in the same context, so geometry from one level welds to another.

Native method vs extension

Comparison of the native SketchUp method and extension options for Draw walls from a traced plan
Native method Trace closed footprint faces, Offset for thickness, Push/Pull to height, group per storey.
What it costs you Reliable and free, but slow and tedious on a large or repetitive plan.
Extension option LizArk generates walls with openings from the plan; Profile Builder keeps a wall as a re-editable assembly.
Worth it when The plan is large, or the wall build-up will change and you do not want to redraw it each time.
