Set a floor plan to the correct scale

How do I import a floor plan into SketchUp at the right scale?

Import the plan, then find one dimension you already know — a door width, a grid spacing, a stated room length. Use the Tape Measure tool to click both ends of that known distance, type the true dimension, and accept the prompt to resize the model. Everything scales together. Lock the image or CAD group before you start tracing so it cannot drift.

The native SketchUp method

Uses only what ships with SketchUp: File > Import, Tape Measure, Lock, Layers/Tags. No extension required.

  1. Import the plan File > Import. For a raster plan choose Image; for CAD choose DWG or DXF and set the import units to match the drawing.
  2. Find a known dimension Pick something you can trust: a printed dimension string, a standard door leaf, or a structural grid spacing.
  3. Measure it With the Tape Measure, click the start and end of that known distance. Do not press Escape yet.
  4. Type the true length Type the real dimension and press Enter. Accept the "resize model" prompt. The whole plan rescales.
  5. Verify on a second dimension Measure a different known distance. If it is off, the first reference was wrong — undo and repeat.
  6. Lock and tag it Group the plan, put it on its own tag, and lock it so tracing cannot nudge it.

Where this usually goes wrong

  • • Scaling from a dimension you assumed rather than one the drawing states.
  • • Forgetting that the resize prompt affects the entire model, including anything already built.
  • • Leaving the plan unlocked, then dragging it mid-trace without noticing.

Native method vs extension

Comparison of the native SketchUp method and extension options for Set a floor plan to the correct scale
Native method Import, then Tape Measure with a typed true dimension to resize the model.
What it costs you Two minutes once you know the trick, and it is exact.
Extension option LizArk reads the plan and sets up scale as part of its import step.
Worth it when You process many plans a week and want tracing and generation in the same pass. For one plan, native is genuinely fine.
