Model stairs that actually fit
How do I model a staircase in SketchUp with correct riser and tread dimensions?
Divide the floor-to-floor height by a target riser of roughly 150 to 190 mm to get a whole number of risers, then derive the tread depth from the run you have available. Model one tread and riser, make it a component, and array it with Move plus Copy and a division count so the whole flight updates from one edit.
Before you start
The native SketchUp method
Uses only what ships with SketchUp: Rectangle, Push/Pull, Move + Copy array, Components. No extension required.
- Fix the riser count Divide floor-to-floor height by your target riser. Round to a whole number, then recompute the exact riser.
- Check the run Multiply treads by tread depth and confirm the flight fits the space you have. Adjust the riser count if not.
- Build one step Model a single tread and riser at the computed dimensions.
- Make it a component Group it as a component so every copy stays linked to one definition.
- Array the flight Move with Copy to place the second step, then type the multiplier — for example 15x — to complete the flight.
- Add landing and railing Model the landing separately, then run a railing along the flight edge.
Where this usually goes wrong
- • A leftover part-riser at the top because the height was not divided into whole risers.
- • Copying steps as loose geometry, so a dimension change means rebuilding all of them.
- • Ignoring headroom above the flight until the section drawing shows the clash.
Native method vs extension
| Native method | Compute risers, model one step as a component, array with Move + Copy and a multiplier. |
|---|---|
| What it costs you | Quick for a straight flight; awkward for winders and curved stairs. |
| Extension option | 1001bit Pro builds parametric stairs from dimensions; Profile Builder keeps the stringer as an assembly. |
| Worth it when | The stair is curved or winding, or the dimensions will be revised several times. |

- 1001bit Pro Free tier + paid · 1001bit
A broad architectural toolset — parametric stairs, escalators, walls, doors, windows, and auto-generated roof rafters — grouped into one toolbar, with a reduced free edition available.
Full profile and sources - Profile Builder 4 Paid · mind.sight.studios
Builds parametric assemblies from a profile and a path, so walls, skirting, glazing bars, decking, and framing stay editable and can be swapped or re-run after the layout changes.
