Control materials and texture placement
How do I apply and align textures properly in SketchUp?
Paint materials onto faces with the Paint Bucket, then right-click the face and choose Texture > Position to set the origin, scale, and rotation with the four coloured pins. Set real-world texture dimensions rather than eyeballing the tile, and apply materials at group or component level so a change updates everywhere at once.
The native SketchUp method
Uses only what ships with SketchUp: Paint Bucket, Texture > Position, Materials tray, Eyedropper. No extension required.
- Set real texture size In the material editor, enter the true tile dimensions so a 600 mm tile reads as 600 mm.
- Paint the face Apply with the Paint Bucket. Hold Shift to fill all matching faces at once.
- Position the texture Right-click > Texture > Position. Drag the red pin to move, green to scale and rotate, blue to shear, yellow to distort.
- Align across faces Sample a positioned face with the Eyedropper and paint the neighbour to carry the alignment across.
- Apply at container level Paint the group or component rather than each face when you want one change to propagate.
- Purge unused materials Remove leftover materials so the tray stays readable and the file stays small.
Where this usually goes wrong
- • Scaling a texture by dragging until it "looks right", which leaves tile sizes wrong in every render.
- • Painting individual faces inside a component, then wondering why a global change does not take.
- • Ignoring reversed faces — a texture on a back face renders inconsistently.
Native method vs extension
| Native method | Paint Bucket with real-world texture dimensions and the Texture > Position pins. |
|---|---|
| What it costs you | Complete for flat and simple curved surfaces; there is no native UV unwrapping. |
| Extension option | No extension in this Atlas is required for standard material work. |
| Worth it when | Not applicable — this is a case where native SketchUp is the right answer. |
