Get quantities out of a model
Can SketchUp give me areas, volumes, and material quantities?
Yes, if the model is organised for it. Entity Info reports area for a selected face and volume for a solid group. SketchUp Pro’s Generate Report exports component and material data to CSV, grouped by attribute. The accuracy depends entirely on consistent tagging, naming, and grouping — a sloppy model gives sloppy numbers.
Before you start
The native SketchUp method
Uses only what ships with SketchUp: Entity Info, Generate Report, Tags, Component naming. No extension required.
- Fix the naming first Name components and materials the way you want them to appear in the report. Rework here is worse than upfront care.
- Make volumes solid Entity Info only reports volume for a genuinely solid group or component.
- Read single quantities Select a face for area or a solid for volume and read the value directly in Entity Info.
- Run Generate Report File > Generate Report in SketchUp Pro. Choose the attributes and grouping you need.
- Export and check Export to CSV and sanity-check two or three values by hand before trusting the whole sheet.
- Re-run after changes Regenerate rather than editing the spreadsheet, so the numbers stay tied to the model.
Where this usually goes wrong
- • Expecting volumes from groups that are not solid — the field simply stays blank.
- • Inconsistent material and component names, which fragment the report into near-duplicate rows.
- • Editing exported quantities by hand, so the next model change silently invalidates them.
Native method vs extension
| Native method | Entity Info for single values, Generate Report to CSV for scheduled quantities. |
|---|---|
| What it costs you | Free with Pro and adequate for counts and areas; no costing and no live update. |
| Extension option | Quantifier Pro attaches costs and reports live from the model as it changes. |
| Worth it when | You price work from the model and need the estimate to move when the design moves. |
