Run trim, skirting, and cabinetry
How do I model skirting and cornice that follows the room?
Draw the profile at one corner, select the path edges you want it to follow, then run Follow Me. SketchUp sweeps the profile along the whole path in one operation. Do the sweep inside its own group, because Follow Me will happily cut into the walls if they share the same context.
Before you start
The native SketchUp method
Uses only what ships with SketchUp: Follow Me, Line, Arc, Offset, Groups. No extension required.
- Draw the profile Model the skirting or cornice cross-section vertically at one internal corner, at real dimensions.
- Work inside a group Group the profile first so the sweep cannot cut into wall geometry.
- Select the path Pick the connected floor or ceiling edges the trim should follow. Click the first edge and hold Shift for the rest.
- Run Follow Me Activate Follow Me and click the profile face. It sweeps the entire selected path at once.
- Check the mitres Orbit the corners. Follow Me mitres automatically, but a badly ordered path produces a twist.
- Make it a component Turn the finished run into a component so a profile change can be swapped in one place.
Where this usually goes wrong
- • Running Follow Me with walls in the same context, which carves grooves into them.
- • Selecting a path that is not continuous, so the sweep stops partway.
- • Building each wall run separately and getting mismatched mitres at the corners.
Native method vs extension
| Native method | Follow Me sweeping a drawn profile along a selected path, inside its own group. |
|---|---|
| What it costs you | One operation per room and it mitres for you; the result is static geometry. |
| Extension option | Profile Builder keeps the run parametric so profile and path stay editable; Joint Push Pull handles awkward multi-face extrusions. |
| Worth it when | The same profile repeats across a whole project, or the profile will be revised after installation drawings start. |
Extensions to consider
Options, not requirements. Facts last checked 28 August 2026.
- Profile Builder 4 Paid · mind.sight.studios
Builds parametric assemblies from a profile and a path, so walls, skirting, glazing bars, decking, and framing stay editable and can be swapped or re-run after the layout changes.
Full profile and sources - Joint Push Pull Interactive Free · Fredo6
Extends push/pull so it works on curved and multi-face selections at once, with normal, joint, vector, and round extrusion modes that native Push/Pull cannot produce in a single operation.
