Place furniture without slowing the model down

Why does SketchUp get slow when I add furniture, and how do I stop it?

Downloaded furniture often carries tens of thousands of polygons each, and SketchUp redraws all of it on every orbit. Check Model Info > Statistics before and after each import, keep every item as a component so copies cost almost nothing, and put furniture on its own tag so you can switch it off while you model.

The native SketchUp method

Uses only what ships with SketchUp: Model Info > Statistics, Components, Tags, Outliner. No extension required.

  1. Read the baseline Open Model Info > Statistics and note the current edge and face count.
  2. Import one item at a time Check Statistics again after each import. A single chair adding 80,000 faces is the culprit, not the model as a whole.
  3. Keep items as components Copies of a component share one definition, so ten identical chairs cost roughly one chair.
  4. Tag by category Put furniture, fittings, and decor on separate tags so you can hide them while modelling.
  5. Reduce or replace the worst offenders Swap an over-detailed model for a simpler one, or reduce its mesh before importing.
  6. Purge regularly Model Info > Statistics > Purge Unused clears definitions left behind by deleted imports.

Where this usually goes wrong

  • • Exploding imported furniture, which destroys the component saving and duplicates geometry.
  • • Blaming the whole model for slowness instead of measuring which import caused it.
  • • Leaving unused component definitions in the file, which bloats saves and startup.

Native method vs extension

Comparison of the native SketchUp method and extension options for Place furniture without slowing the model down
Native method Audit with Statistics, keep components intact, tag for visibility, and purge unused definitions.
What it costs you Free and effective as discipline, but it cannot make an over-detailed mesh lighter.
Extension option Skimp previews and reduces a mesh on import; CleanUp³ strips redundant geometry after the fact.
Worth it when You regularly import third-party or scanned models whose polygon counts you do not control.
