Light an interior scene
Why do my interior renders look dark and flat?
Interiors are usually underlit because the only opening is behind the camera and the sun is pointed the wrong way. Set the real date, time, and north direction so daylight enters through the actual windows, keep glass a single thin pane, and add interior light sources rather than raising exposure to compensate for missing light.
Before you start
The native SketchUp method
Uses only what ships with SketchUp: Shadows, Solar North toolbar, Position Camera, Styles. No extension required.
- Set north correctly Use the Solar North toolbar so the sun arrives from the direction it actually would on site.
- Pick a real date and time Mid-morning or mid-afternoon gives directional light. Noon flattens everything.
- Model glass as one pane A single thin face with a glass material behaves predictably. Double-skinned glass confuses most renderers.
- Place the camera to see light Frame the view so a window or opening is within or near the shot. Light needs a visible source to read.
- Add interior sources Place actual light objects for lamps and downlights rather than pushing global exposure up.
- Check with a test render Render small and fast repeatedly. Diagnose the lighting before committing to a long final pass.
Where this usually goes wrong
- • Raising exposure to fix a scene that simply has no light entering it.
- • Leaving north at its default, so the sun enters through a blank wall.
- • Modelling glass as a thick solid, which produces muddy refraction.
Native method vs extension
| Native method | Correct solar north, real date and time, single-pane glass, and deliberate camera framing. |
|---|---|
| What it costs you | Gets the fundamentals right for free, but SketchUp has no artificial light objects. |
| Extension option | Enscape and V-Ray both add real light sources, exposure control, and interior bounce. |
| Worth it when | Any serious interior visualisation. Artificial lighting is a genuine native gap. |
Extensions to consider
Options, not requirements. Facts last checked 28 August 2026.
- Enscape Paid · Chaos
Real-time renderer that runs inside SketchUp, so a live window updates as you model and you can walk the scene instead of waiting on a still frame.
Full profile and sources - V-Ray for SketchUp Paid · Chaos
Production renderer with CPU and GPU engines, physical materials, and fine control over lighting and output, aimed at final photoreal images rather than live navigation.
