Model organic and sculpted forms
How do I model curved, organic shapes in SketchUp?
SketchUp is a planar-face modeller, so curves are always faceted approximations. Natively, combine Follow Me, Sandbox Smoove, and Soften/Smooth Edges to fake continuous surfaces. For genuine subdivision, sculpting brushes, and free-form deformation you need an extension — this is one of SketchUp’s real functional gaps.
Before you start
The native SketchUp method
Uses only what ships with SketchUp: Follow Me, Sandbox Smoove, Soften/Smooth Edges, Scale. No extension required.
- Set segment counts first Type a segment count when drawing arcs and circles. You cannot add smoothness later without rebuilding.
- Sweep what you can Follow Me handles anything that is a profile along a path — bottles, handrails, mouldings.
- Use Sandbox for gentle surfaces A Sandbox grid plus Smoove with a radius produces soft undulating forms.
- Soften the edges Select the faces and soften/smooth so the facets read as a continuous surface.
- Accept the gap Genuine subdivision, sculpting, and free-form deformation are not native. Recognise that early rather than fighting it.
- Watch the face count Subdivided geometry grows fast. Keep the dense version in its own group so you can swap a proxy in.
Where this usually goes wrong
- • Trying to force organic forms out of Push/Pull and ending up with unusable geometry.
- • Leaving arcs at the default segment count, then finding the silhouette faceted in the render.
- • Subdividing at high levels early, which makes the model unworkable for the rest of the job.
Native method vs extension
| Native method | Follow Me, Sandbox Smoove, and edge softening to approximate curvature. |
|---|---|
| What it costs you | Fine for swept and gently curved forms; genuinely cannot do subdivision sculpting. |
| Extension option | Artisan adds subdivision surfaces, sculpting brushes, and free-form deformation. |
| Worth it when | The form is truly organic. This is an honest native limitation, not a shortcut being sold to you. |
