Round and bevel edges

How do I round off or chamfer edges in SketchUp?

Natively, draw an arc or chamfer profile at the end of the edge and sweep it with Follow Me. That is exact and free but slow past one or two corners. For many corners at once, a parametric rounding extension takes a radius and segment count and applies it across a whole selection.

Before you start

The native SketchUp method

Uses only what ships with SketchUp: Arc, Follow Me, Soften/Smooth Edges, 2 Point Arc. No extension required.

  1. Decide radius and segments A small radius with few segments reads fine and keeps the face count down.
  2. Draw the profile Use 2 Point Arc across the corner at the end of the edge you want rounded.
  3. Trim the waste Erase the small corner region outside the arc so a clean sweep profile remains.
  4. Sweep with Follow Me Select the edge path, run Follow Me on the profile face.
  5. Smooth the result Select the new faces and soften edges so the fillet reads as a curve.
  6. Batch the rest For many corners, apply a parametric rounding extension across the whole selection instead of repeating this.

Where this usually goes wrong

  • • Using a high segment count everywhere, which multiplies faces for no visible benefit.
  • • Rounding before the form is final, so every shape change destroys the fillets.
  • • Sweeping in the same context as neighbouring geometry, which cuts into it.

Native method vs extension

Comparison of the native SketchUp method and extension options for Round and bevel edges
Native method Arc profile swept with Follow Me, then softened.
What it costs you Exact, but roughly a minute per corner once you include cleanup.
Extension option FredoCorner applies round, bevel, or subdivision across many corners parametrically; Artisan handles organic smoothing.
Worth it when You are detailing furniture or products where dozens of corners need a consistent radius.
