Render your first presentable image
How do I get a good-looking image out of SketchUp?
Fix the camera and the model before reaching for a renderer. Set a field of view around 35 to 50 degrees, put the camera at eye height, turn on shadows with a real date and time, and export at twice the size you need. A styled SketchUp export can be genuinely presentable. A renderer adds realism, not composition.
Before you start
The native SketchUp method
Uses only what ships with SketchUp: Camera > Field of View, Position Camera, Shadows, Styles, Export 2D Graphic. No extension required.
- Set the camera properly Use Position Camera at about 1.6 m eye height rather than orbiting to a random viewpoint.
- Fix the field of view Camera > Field of View, then type a value. Around 35 to 50 degrees looks natural; wide angles distort.
- Turn on real shadows Set an actual date, time, and north direction. Correct shadows do more for realism than most render settings.
- Choose a style deliberately Turn profiles down or off, pick a background, and decide whether you want lines at all.
- Save the scene Store the camera, style, and shadow state as a scene so you can return to the exact view.
- Export large File > Export > 2D Graphic at roughly twice the final size, then downscale. It hides aliasing.
Where this usually goes wrong
- • Rendering from an orbit-and-hope camera, which no renderer can rescue.
- • Leaving the default wide field of view, which bends verticals unpleasantly.
- • Exporting at screen resolution and then trying to enlarge it.
Native method vs extension
| Native method | Deliberate camera, real shadow settings, a chosen style, and a large 2D export. |
|---|---|
| What it costs you | Free, fast, and enough for many design and concept presentations. |
| Extension option | Enscape renders in real time as you model; V-Ray targets final photoreal stills with fine control. |
| Worth it when | The client expects photorealism, or you need accurate interior lighting. Composition still has to come from you. |
Extensions to consider
Options, not requirements. Facts last checked 28 August 2026.
- Enscape Paid · Chaos
Real-time renderer that runs inside SketchUp, so a live window updates as you model and you can walk the scene instead of waiting on a still frame.
Full profile and sources - V-Ray for SketchUp Paid · Chaos
Production renderer with CPU and GPU engines, physical materials, and fine control over lighting and output, aimed at final photoreal images rather than live navigation.

- Produce a render — Repair the model, set the camera, light it, and populate it into a presentable image.
